Giant Smooth Muscle Cells of Berok" Ultrastructure, Innervation, and Electrical Properties

چکیده
I N T R O D U C T I O N Beroid ctenophores possess a system of mesogleal muscle fibers organized into several distinct fields and innervated by processes of the ectodermal nerve net (Hertwig, 1880; Franc, 1970; Hernandez-Nicaise , 1973 a,b,c). Each muscle fiber is a single cell tha t appears to contract in a tonic fashion when stretched and displays no striation pat tern. This together with other criteria suggest tha t the fibers m a y be classified as smooth muscle. T h e y run independen t ly for considerable distances (6 cm or more) and are large enough (20-40 #m in diameter) to permit intracel lular recording. Intracel lular s t imulat ion initiates large propaga t ing action potentials wi thout not iceably shortening the muscle. J. GEN. PHYSIOL. Giant smooth muscle cells of Beroe. Ultrastructure, innervation, and electrical properties
Beroë muscle fibers are single cells which may be 20-40 micrometer in diameter in mature specimens. Longitudinal muscles may be 6 cm or more long. There is no striation pattern and the muscles were observed to contract in a tonic fashion when stretched. They are innervated by a nerve net, and external recording revealed what are probably nerve net impulses. Intracellular stimulation of the musc...
متن کاملMetastatic giant cell osteosarcoma in a cat
A four-year-old male Persian cat was referred with three weeks history of progressive lameness due to a rigid osseous mass with 3.50×2.50×2.00 cm in dimensions in his left arm. In the histopathological evaluation of bone biopsy, two distinct populations of cells including multinucleated giant cells and oval cells which embedded in a fibro-osseous stroma and surrounded by lamellar bone trabecula...
متن کاملUltrastructural features of the innervation and smooth muscle of the rabbit facial vein, and their relationship to function.
The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent the ultrastructure of the intramedial plexus of autonomic nerves and the smooth muscle of the rabbit facial vein could be correlated with the functional properties of this vessel. The mean observed widths of neuromuscular clefts were 250 nm in untreated control vessels, 260 in the dilated vein, and 390 in the contracted vein. Variation i...
متن کاملA Study of the Innervation of the Taenia Coli
An electrophysiological and anatomical study of the guinea pig taenia coli is reported. Changing the membrane potential of single cells cannot modulate the rate of firing action potentials but does reveal electrical coupling between the cells during propagation. The amplitude of the junction potentials which occur during transmission from inhibitory nerves is unaffected in many cells during alt...
متن کاملInnervation of the Blood Capillary in the Heart of Dog and Rabbit.
The relationship between the nervous system and the terminal vascular beds has not been adequately established, because the histological methods applied to the identification of the vascular terminals of the vaso-motor nerves seem to be inadequate from the ultrastructural point of view. It has been claimed that the nerve nets which surround the capillary are arranged in a syncytial fashion, alt...
